Fisherman’s Daughter Graduated With Highest Honors

Coming from a less fortunate family involves a lot of struggles. In fact, it would be difficult to send the children to school due to financial struggles. But for Regine Villamor, a 20-year-old lady who hails from Cebu, life’s obstacles would not prevent her from achieving her goals.

She comes from a simple family. Her father is a fisherman, and that is the primary means of living. Despite the financial shortage, Regine continued her college degree and will graduate as magna cum laude from the University of San Jose-Recoletos, Cebu City.  She uses all the difficulties in life and the love of her family to excel in school.

In an interview by the Philippine Entertainment Portal, Regine narrated that Mang Raul, his father gets up two or three in the morning to fish. He comes back home three in the afternoon. Sometimes Mang Raul would come home with a good catch, but sometimes no catch at all.

The minimum earning of Mang Raul is Php700 a day but may also depend on the catch. If the weather is not favorable, her father cannot go fishing.  Her mother sells the fish on the roadside near their house. Whenever Regine comes home, she sells fish along with her mother, Mary Jane.

Regine would travel over two hours from her hometown to Cebu City. That’s why she stays in a boarding house. She filled a part of the wall in her room photos of her family to serve as inspiration. Every time she feels exhausted, she would stare at the photos to keep her going. Maintaining good grades, they granted her a 50% discount on tuition fees.

As she will graduate Magna Cum Laude, Regine gave a piece of advice to her fellow students. She encourages students not to give up on achieving their dreams. Being optimistic and determined is the key to achieve the goals in life despite of complicated situations. Above all, the love from the family serves as the driving force to continue life and pursuing dreams. {via}

DepEd Statement about Opening of Class for SY 2020-2021

DepEd Statement about Opening of Class for SY 2020-2021

Is Education taking the backstage with the ever-growing cases of COVID-19 patients? The Department of Education is conducting meetings to sort it out. Here’s the latest.

The government agency is trying to come up with a viable solution for the SY 2020-2021. It’s asking the opinions of education experts and committees. Likewise, parents and even students play important roles while expressing their views on Social Media such as Facebook.

By law, the start of classes must fall between the first Monday of June until August 31. Almost everyone with authority insists that they start classes on August.

There are 700,000 respondents that DepEd is interviewing. Some of the topics they must answer are social distancing, online classes, and other alternative approaches to learning.

With the pandemic getting worse, the government is looking for ways to help the younger generation learn while staying at home. We can expect feedback about the situation in the coming days.

For now, President Rodrigo Duterte gets recommendations about the matter from the IATF (Inter-Agency Task Force) – the agency responsible for managing ‘infectious diseases resolutions.’

Education is still a top priority in this country, and students will continue their education, one way or another. There are more ways now to learn. And the government won’t rest until students can get a proper education.

Let’s all work together amid the pandemic. It’s a difficult situation everyone is in these days. But, if everyone cooperates, then we can be safer, especially when we go out of our houses.

Let’s find it in ourselves to listen to the authorities, and maintain social distancing. Our lives are changing. There’s a ‘new normal,’ and we need to get used to it, for now.

It’s not an easy task, but, with God’s grace, and the capabilities of government officials and front-liners, then we might have a shot at this. The availability of a vaccine may be far away. So, what we can do right now is abide by the rules that can keep us safe. We can do this!

She expressed her enthusiasm to finish her third online course. Learning keeps her busy and productive. The agriculture course provided her insights about sustainable gardening and survival gardens.

The Tesda Online Program has 68 courses offered from TESDA. This includes electronics, healthcare, tourism,  and food processing, among others.

Pinoys can join TESDA online programs. If you’re interested, create an account on their web portal, e-tesda.gov.ph. Tuition is free and students can even go to face-to-face assessment once the quarantine period is over.

here’s a guide on how to enroll TESDA ONLINE PROGRAM COurses

TESDA is one of the government agencies trying to create opportunities for Filipinos right now. There is hope. We Filipinos must rely on that if we are rising after the pandemic.

There are hundreds, if not thousands of free online programs for everyone on the net. TESDA’s been doing their online courses for a while now. But, since the pandemic, it looks like they’ve added more.

Courses they offer vary, and there’s something for everyone. Food lovers will delight in processing courses like making jams and jellies. There’s also entrepreneurial courses for business-minded people. The choices are many, and it’s a great use of time to learn something new during the pandemic.

The best thing about these courses is that you can use what you’ve learned after the pandemic is over. Your learning can be something you earn from. After all, life after COVID will change dramatically as some experts suggest.

That said, people must work harder to make up for lost time and money.

Vickie Rushton said on her caption:

“Earlier today, I finished my third online course. It feels so good to do something productive while on quarantine.

Image via Vickie Rushton | ig

Last April 13, I enrolled myself in the TESDA Online Program (TOP). TOP offers 68 online courses for free and they are all self-paced. I took courses under Agriculture, Entrepreneurship and 21st Century Skills. The topics in these courses are so useful and timely. Since I love gardening, it broadened my knowledge about growing plants and the importance of having a sustainable garden or “survival garden” in our backyards. Im also sharing some notes under Managing Your Personal Finances. Since the ECQ has been extended until May 15, I thought of sharing this with you.

Enrollment is quick and easy. Just go to e-tesda.gov.ph. May certificate din after! “

Look: 18yr Old Teenage Mom Successfully Completed Her Medtech Degree

Zianne Tremedal is a teenage mom who got pregnant when she was 18. She was about to enroll for third year in college as a MedTech student when she found out that she’s two months pregnant. At first, she doesn’t have any idea about her pregnancy because she has irregular menstruation. Neither had she experienced morning sickness. Thus, to rule out her doubt she took a pregnancy test and found out that it was positive.

To confirm the result of the pregnancy test, she got an ultrasound and learned that the baby was 8 weeks old. Hearing the first heartbeat of her baby made her cry. Zianne realized that she was not on the right direction that her parents want for her future. But, she thought that the pregnancy was not the hindrance to complete her studies.

Since her family has been living in Mindanao, her parents learned about her condition via phone call. For two weeks, her mother doesn’t want to talk to her and her dad became sickly. Maybe because they were disappointed of what happened. Zianne is lucky enough because her parents continued to support her. In fact, her father allowed her to divulge her pregnancy to her friends and not to hide it. With her condition, she needs to decide whether to go home to Mindanao or continue her studies.

Obviously, as she was determined to finish her degree she decided to continue her school. She had talked with her professors and college dean to allow her to continue her schooling. At first, the faculty was hesitant as they know it would be difficult for her. But, they eventually agreed with the assurance that her health and the baby would not be compromised.

After her classes, she would spend her time to study in the library so that she can sleep at night. Her classmates were so kind that they took care of her while in school. There are even times that Zianne would ask for free vitamins and maternal milk from her ob-gyn. She also experienced the harsh conversation and looks of other people she passed by. But, because of her willpower to finish her college, she just ignored them.

Two weeks after she enrolled for the second semester, Zianne delivered a healthy baby boy through a normal delivery. This means that she can go back to school the soonest possible time. But, she had no other choice but to leave her son, Euri Aszher to her parents in Mindanao.

For four months, she did her best to collect few bottles of breast milk and send it to her baby through cargo. The only connection they had was video chat. She almost gives up every time she heard his son crying. But, she endured everything just to finish her studies for her family.

On April 2018, Zianne completed her Medical Technology degree on time and no failed grades. His son will be turning 2 this year. With all the challenges that Zianne had went through, she’s always grateful to her parents. They never leave her in spite of the mistakes she did.

Damong Makahiya Spotted Selling in Canada for $7.99 or almost Php400

Damong Makahiya Spotted Selling in Canada for $7.99 or almost Php400

The Philippines is a country rich in natural resources. You will find many beautiful beaches, mountains, and different forms of water and land. Aside from these, the country is also rich in different kinds of plants, trees, and weeds. Some weeds and even trees can be seen growing just anywhere. But do you know that an ordinary weed here is an important plant in other countries? The makahiya plant is just an ordinary weed here and children love playing with its leaves because it closes once they touch it.

Than-than Javier posted a photo of Makahiya with a tag price of $7.99 or almost Php400 and it has been trending ever since. If the plant is just considered as an ordinary weed here, it’s not regarded that way in foreign countries like Canada.

The netizen captioned his post saying that makahiya or sensitive plant is just a weed in the Philippines. There are so many makahiya all over the country because of the hot climate which is what the weed loves. Being a tropical country, weeds appear just about anywhere.

Considering the cold climate in Canada, this explains why makahiya is a bit pricey because it won’t be easy to grow this weed with the kind of weather they have. Makahiya has many health benefits and this is why it’s being sold in other countries. It can be used to cure illnesses like cough & cold, dysmenorrhea, digestive system conditions, among others.

It is also rich in antioxidants like amino acids, flavonoids, and fatty acids. It is also loaded with minerals. Javier said that he wondered at first why it’s being sold at that price but when another FB user explained the health benefits of the weed, he was able to understand why it’s priced that way. After all, if it’s for health so there should be no question about it.

Teacher Emil of Lamag Elementary School in Lamag, Quirino, Ilocos Sur gave his fishes from the goodness of his heart! He’s our kind of hero.  Josephine Tali shared the story on Facebook.

Honest Wife Whendy Pido Turns Down the Extra Php5,000 Cash Aid

North Cotabato, Philippines – Whendy Pido earned praises after turning down another Php5,000 cash aid after her husband received the same amount for their household. The Philippine government is giving one cash aid per household. This prompted Whendy to turn down the extra cash aid.

It’s a wife’s tale of honesty.

DSWD Region XII shared this remarkable deed, stating that the office wishes other locals would also show concern for others. They’re impressed with Whendy that they posted her photo on their Facebook page.

Whendy is a 28-year old wife. She lives in Basak, Magpet, North Cotabato, and has one child.

The agency mentioned that she willingly gave back the money. It was a deed close to her heart because she knew that some other family needs the money too. It’s the truth.

Even in times of the pandemic, there are still people who care. Despite the challenges that everyone is facing now, you’d be surprised, by the growing number of people going out there, and helping others.

At this time, all of us have a role to play. For front-liners, they’re giving their all to manage peace and order, treat patients, and produce, and provide food. On the other hand, everyone at home should try their best to keep safe from the virus and pray for everyone who needs to go outside and work. We got this!

Kudos to Whendy for being one of them! Ms. Whendy, you just showed many that there’s hope for humanity. Because of you, another family will get some money to buy their basic needs.

The pandemic may have brought fear to many of us. But it’s also teaching us some valuable lessons we can use from now on. One is saving for the rainy days for the people who can. Another is knowing the importance of kindness.

Steps to a Better Social Distancing Implemented by Kalentong Market

0
Steps to a Better Social Distancing Implemented by Kalentong Market

The growing number of COVID-19 affected people is forcing local government heads to look for more innovative ways to help stop the spread of the virus. How are things going so far? For Mandaluyong residents, the city is implementing a new policy.

The thriving city banned entry and exit of their area of responsibility. They were very strict about it. On April 17, Friday, the municipality started a new social distancing policy.

3 Necessary Steps to Social Distancing in Mandaluyong, Kalentong Market:

  • Residents of Mandaluyong with surnames starting with A to L can go to Kalentong Market every Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday.
  • The residents with surnames starting with M to Z are allowed to go on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.
  • They’re closing the market every Monday for disinfection.

Will this work? It’s a systematized step that will limit the flow of human traffic. At this point, everyone should follow instructions from their local government and other authorities.

We can’t lose hope. The pandemic has affected many lives in and out of the country. It continues to affect more if residents become stubborn and go out of their houses like there’s no serious health emergency. Government officials, front-liners, and concerned individuals can’t stress enough that we should all stay inside if we don’t have a business outside.

The sooner the authorities contain the virus, the better. The new social distancing policy by the Kalentong Market is a new tactic that might help avoid more people outside. Let’s try to keep healthy and boost our immunity while there’s still a pandemic. Everyone’s lives will change after this.

If we’re alive and healthy by the time the pandemic ends, then we can face another challenge, which is to rise after the catastrophe. We need all the energy, good health, and motivation we can get if we are to re-emerge as a country that survived a pandemic.

COVID-19 Calamity Loan Program by SSS Starts on April 24

Manila, Philippines – Business Inquirer reports the COVID-19 Calamity Loan program from the Social Security System (SSS) on April 15. According to SSS Vice President, Fernando F. Nicolas expressed the intention of the government institution to provide a nationwide launch of the much-needed calamity loan. The application starts on April 24, Friday.

COVID-19-Calamity-Loan-Program-by-SSS

How can members apply for COVID-19 Calamity Loan?

All SSS members can apply for up to Php20,000, which is equivalent to a ‘one-month salary credit.’ They can use the money for their March to May expenses, considering the quarantine period is this devastating time. The agency has more than 1.74 million members. About Php20.4B will go to the members who need the loan the most.

With the enhanced quarantine period still in effect, members can apply online through the SSS website or mobile app. They need to sign up for a My SSS account. Members can claim their loans from their enrolled bank accounts.

Members need to prepare the following:

  • Duly accomplished Calamity Loan Assistance Application Form (accessible in the sss.gov website)
  • Barangay Certification
  • At least one (1) primary ID:
    • Unified Multi-Purpose ID (UMID)
    • Driver’s License
    • Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) ID
    • Passport
    • Seaman’s Book
  • Or two (2) secondary IDs
    • Company ID
    • Taxpayer’s Identification Number (TIN) ID
    • Senior Citizen ID
    • Voter’s ID
    • PhilHealth ID
  • For Overseas Filipino Workers
    • An authorization letter from the OFW
    • Printed copies of valid ID of the OFW plus original valid ID of the representative

SSS gives its members 27 months to pay with a ‘three-month moratorium period’ and a waived 1% service fee. Payments start 4 months after approval. There’s also a 10% interest per annum, which they will compute through the members’ ‘diminishing principal balance.’

Nicolas added SSS is working on a moratorium for its pension and housing loans. The agency is taking the necessary steps to release pensions early, suspend ‘proof of life requirement’ for the meantime, and extend the deadlines for contributions. They’re also in the talks to provide more assistant as the COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect lives.

The quarantine period will end on April 30, but there are speculations that the government might extend another week or two. The COVID-19 situation is far from over, but authorities and all front-liners are doing everything they can to help patients and other affected families. When will this end? The truth is, no one knows right now. But, we must hope for the best and put our trust in God that He will heal our land in time.

Why You Should Not Use Water Bottles For Disinfectants

Why You Should Not Use Water Bottles For Disinfectants

A medical group reminded that people should not put their alcohol and disinfectant in water bottles. Put a label in the bottle where you will put the disinfectant. Keep the disinfectant out of children’s reach. Put it in a safe place and away from your kids.

The Philippine Society for Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hematology and Nutrition posted a special reminder last March 27. They informed the netizens to not use water bottles as disinfectant containers. Kids may think that the liquid inside the bottle is actually water. Do not put the lives of your family members in danger.

This is a warning after news about drinking the bleach accidentally because the person thought it is water. The medical group said many hospitals are filled with COVID-19 patients and they don’t want people being poisoned by bleach solution.

The medical group gave 3 friendly reminders to netizens.

  1. Put a proper label in the disinfectant container.
  2. Put the disinfectant in higher places and out of reach.
  3. Do not use bottles of soft drink, mineral water and iced tea as alcohol and disinfectant container.

The advisory received positive comments from the public. One commenter thanked the medical group and said many people are doing that. Another commenter shared that he experienced drinking water with soap because it is inside a water cup. One commenter said that they are putting a label in the container, so they will not make a mistake.

The Philippines is facing a serious problem due to coronavirus. The public are doing their best to follow the rules and sanitize their homes. They are cleaning their belongings and their house using disinfectant like bleach or alcohol. They sometimes use the water bottles as a container for disinfectant. To prevent any accidents and poisoning, we advise the public to properly label the disinfectant.
